ZDocj is appropriate for those who only do oocasional editing. Its main advantages are that it's free, relatively fast, and works on very large files. It was tested on files of about 60 MB, but is designed to handle files up to nearly 256 MB.
The feature list is very basic: cut, copy, paste, mark, find, and replace. Handles compressed and encrypted files. Can create, rename, and delete files. Rudimentary support for VFS (plain text) files on memory cards on some PDAs.
A manual and FAQ list are provided, but should be largely unnecessary for most users.
Source is available (free, GPL), for those who would like to make improvements or customizations.
Updated Description:
v1.6:
- Coalesces records when writing to a file.
- This should be transparent to almost everyone.
- Performance in modifying large compressed files may be slightly lower.
- The change is imperceptible to the author.
- You may notice that your files now use less records for a given amount of text.
