Smart phones are the devices that offer the basic functionality of calling and attending calls along with other sophisticated features like push e-mails, calendaring, managing contacts and Internet surfing (to some limited extent).
Smart phones offer smart ways for corporate people to remain in touch with the business and streamline their work profile while they are away from it. It provides them instant updates irrespective of their location. They are also called as Personal Digital Assistants (PDAs). PDAs run on operating system like Windows Mobile, Symbian, Palm and others. The companies dealing with development of smart phone software keep on marketing the updated version timely.
Recently, the users were offered updates for various PDAs like RIM BlackBerrys, Windows Mobile and others but missed on update releases on Palm . Most of the competing vendors have continuously released and offered new products to the customers based on demand and usage however the absence of any such update from Palm exhibited irregularities and non-competency which is well comprehended as a statement "Is Palm OS reaching death?"
Palm, a renowned name in providing operating system for PDAs which are efficient and easy but for years was moving on a gradual decline. Uncertainty cropped in since the times Palm offered Palm Treos running on Windows Mobile in 2006 whereas a new update mobile based platform was awaited by analysts, followed by the information indicating that Palm is busy developing Linux based operating system for its upcoming PDAs. Market watchers blame the out classed Smart phones by Palm as compared against iPhone, Voyager, showed as a major reason for downslide.
Palm had been one of the most popular operating systems for years providing reliability and sturdiness to consumers and thus the goodwill.
Ironically, till today the Palms come loaded with bundle of functionalities and utilities like Dataviz's Documents To Go (for editing and viewing Microsoft Office files), Voice Memo, Camcorder, Camera, Memos, Tasks, e-mail, Web browsing, and software for playing multimedia files. The Palms are also supported by bunch of third party applications that provide it an upstart against Apple iPhone. The feature most adored by all Palm users is its keyboard which is spaced nicely and keys are firm rather than stiff, easing the experience.
With a bundle of admirable features, what are all those utilities that have pushed this operating system on the verge of death:
1. The feature that is gradually becoming the USP of PDAs these days is touch screen, but surprisingly, Palms and Treos lack this. The feature might be irritating for some but demand is surely very high currently.
2. WiFi connectivity is also missing ,which is perhaps the very basic in any such smartphone. Naturally the absence would raise eyebrows. The same is with Palm; models still available in market do not support this feature.
3. GPS might just not be that important but people recognize this as a must have feature (whether they use it or not). Same case, Palms do not support any GPS functionality.
We cannot be authentic about whether or not Palm holds a future but sure it can possibly be nominated as a strong combo for a miss-n-match device. At crux, Palm can not be declared as dying platform . However, we cannot say that it has a promising future ahead.
