We've had the Palm Treo Pro in the Mobile Computer office for a couple of days now and to tide you over until we publish our full review, we've shot a hands-on video to give our first impressions of this Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional smartphone.
This is Pam's high-end business smartphone and it's the first time it's come up with what we consider a standard set of modern smartphone features - Wi-Fi, 3G and GPS. Palm is pitching it as an alternative to the BlackBerry Bold, but while it's a stylish little handset, we don't really think it's in the same league as the Bold, both in terms of design and usability.
There are a few nice hardware and software touches - there's a 3.5mm headphone socket (at last!) and the centre button glows as a message alert (same as on the Nokia E71). Unfortunately, Palm has also plumped for a microUSB connector rather than the more common miniUSB.
Palm also hasn't made any attempt to make the operating system a little friendlier. Contrast this with HTC, who's trying very hard to keep Windows Mobile out of sight as much as possible.
Still, this is by far Palm's most capable smartphone to date, though we'd much rather see PalmOS 2 on a device like this rather than Windows Mobile. At the moment, Palm's only serious PalmOS-based smartphone is the Centro.
